Bangla Mountaineering & Trekking Club (BMTC) arranged a flag-in ceremony to celebrate the conquest of Mt Mera in Nepal by Bangladeshi mountaineers on Friday.
On October 15, a team of three trekkers led by Mount Everest climber MA Mohit, Kazi Bahlul Maznu, and Shayla Parvin, reached the summit of 21,830 feet high Mera Peak of the Himalayas.
While MA Muhit and Kazi Bahlul Maznu had trekked to Mera Peak previously, it was the first attempt for for Shayla Parvin after undertaking formal mountaineering training in India. She had also trekked to Mount Kyajo Ri in Nepal in 2015.
The mountaineers shared their experiences at the conference at National Press Club while returning the expedition flags to the guests.
The four mountaineers left for Nepal on October 4 and began their expedition from Lukla Airport, also known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport, on October 7. After trekking for nine days they reached the peak on October 15.
At the ceremony, Shayla Parvin while sharing her experience said: “It was very windy and the path was very long. When I reached at the peak, I was not able to feel anything because of hunger and extreme cold. My inspiration was my fellow team members whose support made it possible for me.”
MA Mohit said that Mera Peak has one of the finest views in the Himalayas with views of – Mount Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Kangchenjunga, besides other Himalayan peaks. He is also the only Bangladeshi mountaineer who has climbed Mt Everest twice.
The ceremony was presided over by expeditor Enam Ul Haque and among the guests were present eminent author, Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, former caretaker government adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman and human rights activists Sultana Kamal.
Congratulating the mountaineers, Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said, “Bangladeshi girls footprints on the Himalayas beside their male colleagues bear witness of steps towards gender equality.”
Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said: “Time has now come to request sponsors to invest more in inspirational activities like trekking.”
Sultana Kamal said: “The trekkers have represented Bangladesh on a world platform and are a source of inspiration for youth.”
The expedition was sponsored jointly by Azim Group, Ispahani Ltd and Channel I.
Azim Group’s Deputy Managing Director Farhan Azim and Ispahani Ltd’s General Manager of Sales and Distribution Omar Hannan also spoke briefly at the ceremony.
